Rio Curriculum {Review}

Rio Curriculum {Review}

I have to admit, I had reviewed the Rio curriculum a few years ago and I was not impressed. It seemed very stale and outdated.  So when David C. Cook asked me to review a sample lesson, I did not have high hopes.  I'm very happy to report I couldn't have been more wrong.   The Rio lesson I looked at was fresh, exciting, and very cutting edge when it comes to using media in the classroom. To begin, let's cover some of the basics: Rio, a digital classroom-based Sunday school curriculum, … [Read more...]

The Divided Kingdom {Lesson and Craft}

The Divided Kingdom {Lesson and Craft}

A few months ago, our church began a journey through the entire Bible using Zondervan's The Story curriculum.  It was a great opportunity to take a look at the "Big God Story" as well as cover some stories that don't always make it into the Children's Church curriculum.  One of the lessons that especially had me worried was the divided kingdom.  I had trouble keeping track of all those kings when I was going through the course in college and I certainly didn't know how to keep it all straight … [Read more...]

Story Time in the Park: Ocean

Story Time in the Park: Ocean

Deep in the Deep Blue Sea! It's our third week for Story Time in the Park this summer and we were happy to see the Early Connection bus roll up to join the activities at Whitford Park!  We met a few new families at Shade's Beach as well during the evening session. Always exciting!  Here's the recap! Songs and Finger Plays For the ocean theme, we did mostly fishy songs, but also through in one classic (Open Close Them) because we were reading a book about opposites.  Here's the songs we … [Read more...]

Story Time in the Park: Frogs!

Story Time in the Park: Frogs!

For our second story time of the summer, we focused on frogs.  It was an appropriate theme for the rainy day.  I'm sure the frogs were loving the weather.  Kids and their parents however... maybe not so much.  Even still, we got a small gathering at Whitford Park, so we're glad about that! Opening Activities This year, I picked up a little Folkmanis Red Squirrel Finger Puppet from Amazon to use as our "Story Time Mascot".  The kids really seem to enjoy "Whitty" and we spend the first few … [Read more...]

252 Basics: Wisdom, Faith, and Friendship Posters

252 Basics: Wisdom, Faith, and Friendship Posters

This summer, we're focusing on the BASICS while hanging out at base camp.     We use the 252Basics curriculum during Wednesday which is based on Luke 2:52: And Jesus grew in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man. The basics are: Wisdom, Faith, and Friendship. The kids helped me make some posters to decorate our humble "stage" area which highlight these three basics. Want to know how we made them? Okay! Okay!  I'll tell you.  :) To begin, we put some paint on a sponge.  I … [Read more...]

Beach Night {Summer Fun!}

Beach Night {Summer Fun!}

This summer, we are introducing THEME NIGHTS in order to bring in some extra excitement and fun.  Last night was "Beach Night" and I just had to share a few pictures with you all! To start off the fun, I bought these super huge beach balls from Discount School Supply.  They were a little pricey ($13 each), but the wow factor was great, so I think they were worth it! My friend Paulette made this super great Beach Theme cake which the kids loved. I love how enthusiastic the kids are!  We … [Read more...]
