Teaching Children the Catechism: Review Week

Teaching Children the Catechism: Review Week

We're entering our first Review and Recitation week with our new curriculum, Kids' Quest.    If you haven't read the background on why we chose this curriculum, check out my introduction to the Children's Catechism here.  So far, the kids have really been engaging with the lessons and they have been remembering the answers to the questions.  Admittedly, the curriculum does move a little slow (we only do 1-2 questions and answers each week), but I would rather really dig deep than rush through … [Read more...]

Sunday Snapshot: Fish Net Snacks

Sunday Snapshot: Fish Net Snacks

My amazing friend and snack manager, Paulette, brought in these super cute snacks the other day to church.  We were studying Luke 5: Peter's miraculous catch of fish.  Check it out: Here's what they looked like when they were passed out to the kids. Open up the net for a bounty of fish (and marshmallows).  This is actually a goldfish mix from Pepperidge Farm.  Delicious! Do you tie in your snack time with the lesson? What are some of the best ideas you've had? I'd love to hear about … [Read more...]

Power Bible: Book Review

Power Bible: Book Review

If you've been reading this blog long, you'll know I'm a big fan of the Action Bible. I love the stunning graphics and the poignant emotions you can see in the character's faces.  I love how it helps kids to really visualize the Bible and how it forces long-time Bible readers to really feel the stories they have  read so many times.  Of course, there are a few drawbacks.  Some of the pictures in this graphic novel are well, graphic.  There's blood.  There's intense emotion. There's some scary … [Read more...]

Blast from the Past: The Sticker Sheet

Blast from the Past: The Sticker Sheet

When I first started as the Children's Ministry director in my current church, East Lake Road Alliance, things were a little shaky in the kids' department.  We had a few faithful volunteers, but a dwindling crowd of kids and a serious lack of direction and excitement.   One of the ways that we rallied the troops was through a simple sticker chart. Now, I'm aware that there is a bit of controversy surrounding rewards and sticker charts in the Children's Ministry world, but I think this was … [Read more...]

Stressed Out? Need A Break?

Stressed Out? Need A Break?

I was talking to my friend the other day about her recent Doctor's appointment. She's a bit of a worrier and her doctor suggested something for anxiety.  She was hesitant to start medication, but would like to find something to ease the occasional bouts of stress.  I bet you can relate.  There are just times in life (VBS season perhaps) that just really pile on the anxiety.   In fact, 95 million Americans suffer from stress-related illnesses every week.   Sure, you could tough it out and make it … [Read more...]

Looking for a New Curriculum? Check out this resource!

You know the struggle of trying to find a new curriculum.  You want to find something just right.. something better than what you're currently using, but you don't know how to really determine if it's the right fit for your group.   Sorting through all the options and making sure you've considered everything can get pretty overwhelming.  Wouldn't it be nice if you had a systematic way to narrow down your choices and figure out the best curriculum for your church and current situation? Well, my … [Read more...]
