Welcome to Day #3 of the 31 Days of Bible Lesson Extras series! All the posts I’ve done so far will be at the bottom of this post and you can also check the “Road Map” for the complete listing, once the series is finished up.
This post will feature a crafts related to the passage, but I’ll also show you want we did in lesson time.
After setting the scene and explaining the background of the passage, we proceeded to the part about Elijah building his altar (I had already told the kids about the false prophets and their altar).
To begin, I constructed a small altar made of stones and stacked a few sticks on top.
Then, I gave each kid a cup of water and asked them to pour it over the altar. We had split the class in half that day, so I only had about 10 kids with me in the room.
I poured the remaining two cups on, just like Elijah had the 12 jars of water poured onto the altar.
There was plenty of water in our “trench” by the time we were done.
We placed the bull on top of the altar and then I read the prayer of Elijah from the passage. I placed some red and yellow tissue paper on the altar as it “burned up everything”.
For our craft time, I had kids color a picture of Elijah on the mountain and add their own tissue paper to the fire, similar to the picture below:
