Our Big Summer Plans!

Flickr by Chester Races

It’s hard to believe that Summer is just around the corner.  In case you haven’t heard, we’ll be taking a break from Vacation Bible School this year and focusing on some new outreach methods.  We want to have activities the whole family can participate in and we’d like to get out in the community a bit more.  If you’re in the Erie, PA area, be sure to join us! Here’s the plan:

Five Fabulous Family Movie Nights: July (Dusk-11PM)

Pack your snacks, lawn chairs and blankets and bring the whole family for an outdoor movie fun on our “big screen”. The movies are free and guaranteed family friendly! It’s a terrific way to enjoy some family summertime fun! Movies begin at dusk. In case of inclement weather, movies will be held indoors in the gym.

Monday Morning Storytime in the Park: June, July, and August

Parents and kids, join us for storytime at Whitford Park this summer! Every Monday Morning at 10:30AM (except July 4th). Listen to a fun story geared towards ages 4-6, have a snack, and enjoy a craft together. Children must be accompanied by an adult. All ages welcome. No cost. Hope to see you there!

Wednesday Night: The BIG STORY

There is a lot of stuff in the pages of the Bible, but believe it or not, it’s all one Big Story about God’s love and his plan for us and the world.  This summer, in Kids’ Club at East Lake Road Alliance,  we’ll explore the major stories in the Bible and how they are all connected.  After hearing the story, the kids will head to stations to explore parts of the story in fun, hands-on ways. Stations may include things like cooking, drama, puppets, art, math, science, games, history, prayer, nature, wood-working, or computer.  Program runs from 6:30PM – 7:30PM. Every week will be something new and different!

What about You?

What are your big ministry or family plans this year?

Decorating Ideas for Shake It Up VBS

Shake-It-Up-Cafe-VBS-2011-Logo-Lo-Res1-1024x732

It’s that time of year again! There are some great VBS programs on the market, as always. If you’re doing Shake It Up Cafe VBS from Cokesbury, check out some of these ideas for decorating:

  • Cokesbury Decorating Page suggests using kitchen items such as pots, pans, rolling pins, spatulas, cafe tables, and chalkboards with “Today’s Special” (the main Bible point) on them.  You can hit dollar stores and garage sales for many of these things.    Be sure to “like” Cokesbury on facebook for more decorating tips to come!
  • If your sanctuary has chairs that can move, you might want to position them to give them a restaurant feel.  You could have four or five circled around an imaginary table or a real table with a checkered table cloth.
  • Cookbooks galore!  Set up piles of cookbooks on the stage, on spare table, on the coat racks, and anywhere else they can be prominently seen, but aren’t in the way.  You can usually score great deals on cookbooks at rummage sales or annual book sales.  Check your local library.  I know the one in Erie has a cookbook sale in May and you can usually get some pretty good deals.  Or ask about getting the leftover books after the sale is over for a discount!
  • Be sure to have some chefs in authentic hats walking around.
  • It looks like many of the days focus on a festival, so you might want to go with a party approach.  Helium balloons always brighten up a room and can last several days if no one touches them.  You can score some decorative pennants (100 feet for $7.99) at Oriental Trading to jazz the room up.
  • Speaking of Oriental Trading, there are lots of other items worth taking a look at including:

Child’s Colorful Aprons

Children’s Aprons ($15/dozen)

Waist Aprons

Waist Apron ($15/dozen)

Chef Hats

Chef’s Hats ($6/dozen)

  • Be sure to take a look at some of the other party sites and search for keywords such as “kitchen”, “cafe”, “chef” and “cooking”.  Some that I’ve used include Party Cheap, Discount School Supply (this is great for your craft stuff), and Shindigz.  Whatever site you visit, be sure to stop by Retail Me Not for discount codes (free shipping anyone?)
  • Set up some cakes and cupcakes for display.  If you don’t want the real thing laying around, you can go for fake food or make your own with paper towel rolls (cupcakes), hat boxes (cakes), or other boxes (cakes).  If you want to go elaborate, get different sizes of boxes (save them from ordering your supplies online!) and make a fancy wedding-like cake for display.  Check out some cool playdough cupcakes here.  Here’s a cake box template if you want to make individual pieces.   You could try to replicate something like this with a shoe box for display:

  • Google images or check Flickr for pictures of cafes or restaurants.  See if anything inspires you.  Awnings would be fun, but a bit much perhaps.
  • Check out videos from test churches and try asking other churches what they did for decorating.  Better yet, find someone in your area that is also doing Shake it up and pool resources!
  • Remember, it’s not the decorations that count.  Sure it’s fun to add some touches here and there, but it’s the activities, learning, and relationships that will really stick with the kids.  Add some fun restaurant like signs, scour some sales for some little extras and then get concentrating on the important stuff: learning about God!

If you’ve got a great decorating idea, be sure to share it below in the comments!

Will We Do VBS this year?

Flickr by FirstBaptistNashville

I have to admit, I struggled with VBS last year.  We visited a few other churches to see how their program was being run and to gather up ideas only to see the same faces over and over again.  We have kids that come to our VBS and never darken the door of the church again until next summer.  We have kids from Christian families that spend their entire summer VBS-hopping.

What does that all mean?  Does it mean the program is a failure? That it’s not making an impact? Could we use our financial and volunteer resources better somewhere else?

Is it enough to have kids hearing the Word of God for one week a year?  What if the kids at our VBS heard the same message at a different church last week?  Are we still being effective?

This year, we’re stepping out of our comfort zone a bit to try something new.  This doesn’t mean we’ll be done with VBS forever.   However, we’d like to explore the idea of engaging families a bit more and getting out into the community where we can.  We’re still kicking around ideas, but we’ve narrowed it down to Friday Family Movie night (inspired by a chapter in the Collaborate book) and weekly Story Time either at our church or in a local park.

What about you?  What kind of plans are in your summer-time future?  Are you rethinking VBS or is it still a strong and successful program in your community?

Get the word out about your VBS!

Here’s some great ideas for publicizing Vacation Bible School (or whatever your summer big event is) in your neighborhood.  The ideas come from a member in our church (SpyGuy, to be exact).  Check them out:

  • Countdown Board Outside with “XX” days to go!  This could also be posted inside the church to generate excitement among the congregation.
  • Sidewalk Line-up: Have kids line up with signs with the events details on the sidewalk in front of the church for a few Saturdays before the big event.   If you have a particular theme, make sure you’ve got some characters out front too!
  • Yard Signs — similar to political ones.  Everyone in the church could take one and put it in their yard announcing the big event.   There is also a Pink Flamingo tactic that gets people talking!

Thirteen Year Old Directs VBS: You Can Too!

Flickr by Reagan's Travels

Just finished listening to an amazing podcast about 13-year old Jake who directed his church’s VBS program and plans to do it again next year!  The church has an average attendance of about 100 and he recruited over 45 volunteers to pitch and help with the 55 kids in attendance.  Here are some tips he shares in order for your VBS to be a fun R.I.D.E.

R: Recruit. You can’t do it alone.  There is a job for everyone.  Work with your volunteers to see what they are best suited for.

I: Impossible is not a very intelligent word. Give it a shot.  It might not be impossible after all!

D: Delegate. Once you’ve assigned jobs, let them go.

E: Experience. Give the kids the experience of the lesson.  They’ll remember it better!

He also shares lots of tips for what worked (and didn’t work) for them.  Listen to the podcast yourself.  This kid is great!

Egypt VBS Tips

egypt_joseph--s_journey

Hard to believe it’s nearing VBS season already!  Last year, we did Group’s Journey to Egypt.

Here are some tips from our Vacation Bible School Evaluation Forms:

  • We had a Minute to Win it game time before the program officially started.  After kids were registered, they went into the sanctuary.  Instead of having them sitting around getting bored, we played 4 or 5 quick games, picking a few kids to come on stage and the rest were watching.  This was a great way to keep kids engaged and prevent the wild running around that usually happens!
  • Have a few people posted at the doors of the Marketplace.  We held our marketplace in the gym and sometimes in all the hub-bub, a few kids would try to wander outside to see the games or visit friends.
  • Make sure kids are gathered around the actors before the actual daily drama started.  Sometimes kids would miss half the message because they didn’t gather around fast enough.

What kind of tips do you have from your last Vacation Bible School program?
