Night on the Town {The Gathering 2013}

For tonight’s night on the town, I met up with my college-friend Kalyn for some California fun!   To start, we hit Umami Burger which was absolutely delicious.  I love the servers there — so friendly and helpful and of course, the burger was supreme!

Next, we headed to Ikea!  I have frequently browsed the catalog but have never actually made it to a store.

It was a blast checking all the home decor and I picked up a few things to take back home to the kids.  Now, I just have to get them to fit into my suitcase!   Should be okay, right?

Looking forward to some more great sessions tomorrow at the Gathering!

Worst Valentines Ideas Ever.

Valentine’s Day — what a sappy, happy day.

It is simply the perfect day to express love and affection to those in your life who you truly care about.

But what do you do with those people you don’t really like well?  You don’t give them one of the Valentine’s listed below.  That would be just terrible.  Just terrible.

Worst Valentines Ever

All of these Valentine’s gifts should be placed inside a paper bag to build the element of surprise.  On the outside of the bag, the Valentine message should be written.

Valentine Idea #1

Outside the Bag: Would you BEE my Valentine?

Inside the Bag: Live Bees

Can I Tell You A Story? {Why I Love Ministry}

Did you ever catch the Kidmin1124 Radio show when it was still on the air?  (If not, you can catch old episodes here).  If so, you’ll remember the part of the show, near the beginning, where Wayne would make everyone share a story about “Why We Do What We Do”. I love hearing ministry stories like the ones we shared on the show and thought you might like a few stories as well.

So what do you think?  Can I tell you a story?

Cool Tools at the School Library

A few months back, we were going through Discipleland “How to Use Your Bible” curriculum (which I cannot recommend highly enough!).  We introduced the kids to Cool Bible Tool such as Bible Dictionaries, Commentaries, and Concordances then we spent a little time during small groups exploring these new tools.  One girl, Hannah, seemed especially interested despite the fact that she was still pretty new to the whole church scene.  She had attended Vacation Bible School, but had only made it to a few weeks of our regular program so far.  Imagine my surprise when Hannah rolled into church the next week with a Bible dictionary tucked up under her arm!  She had gone to her school library and checked out a Bible dictionary so she could practice at home more with a cool Bible tool!

Stirring In My Heart

I remember when I first started as the Children’s Ministry director at my church.  I was fresh out of college, high on ideas and low on experience.  There were three faithful ladies who had been carrying the Children’s program and they supported me entirely as I muddled my way into setting up a program and growing as a leader.  Doris was one of those ladies.  She was a wonderful role model to the small group of girls she worked with.  She expected a lot out them and often pushed them out of their comfort zone towards Jesus.  After the program was up and running a bit, Doris stepped away to allow room for other volunteers.

Fast forward five years.  The Wednesday night program has grown and we were in need for a few more small group leaders.   I had put opportunity in the bulletin and also had begun talking to a few people about it.  Doris approached me and said that she was recently cleaning out her basement and had stumbled onto her old Children’s Ministry materials.  She had felt a stirring in her heart and wondered if she should return to the program.  She began praying about it and then read my bulletin announcement the next Sunday in church.  She rejoined the group and did a great job working with the kids once again.

New Year, New Resolutions!

This Year, I Will…

Have you made your New Year Resolutions yet?

I’ve got a few I’m kicking around, but I’d love to hear yours as well!  Here’s what I’ve got:

Be More Available At Church

Inspired by the book The 360 Degree Leader, I have resolved to  ”walk slowly through the halls” and be more available to both my volunteers and people at church.  Too often, I’m rushing to gather up one more prop or review my lesson one more time and I view people as an interruption rather than an opportunity to do ministry.  I would love to be able to great people at the door, especially new guests and be able to walk them to classrooms instead of blowing by them.

Read Every Book I Own

I don’t know about you, but I have a compulsion when it comes to books.  My Amazon wishlist has over 400 books in it and we visit the library at least twice a month to stock up on more books.  The used book sale is one of my favorite events in Erie and often I buy a book “I just have to have” and then never actually get around to reading it.  These books line my shelves waiting for “someday” to come.  Well, this year — it’s use it or lose it!  I will either read the book or give it away.  So far, I’ve counted 32 unread books, so I’ve got some work to do!

Create Quality Sibling Time for my Kids

My kids are ages 3 and 1 and they sometimes play together well and sometimes… they don’t.   I’ve used a few strategies from Amanda over at OhAmanda.com, but my kids are pretty young and not very good at reasoning through things yet!  Often, I intervene when they are fighting over a toy, but then they find something new to fight over!  I’ve discovered that they get along better when they’ve had some quality time together — that I have to facilitate and referee of course.   Once we’ve all played together {nicely!} for a a few minutes, it is much easier for them to get along while playing by themselves.  We’ll see what happens!

Exercise for 10 Minutes a Day

Just trying to keep this resolution within reach!

Measure Ministry Better

I work hard in my Children’s Ministry position, but I often wonder — is this working?  Am I TRULY making a difference?  I’ve been reading through the book, Deep & Wide: Creating Churches Unchurched People Love to Attend by Andy Stanley (Excellent Book!!) and thinking about what our “wins” are in Children’s Ministry?  Is it kids coming to Christ?  Kids taking a greater ownership of their faith? Inviting a friend?  Is it parents becoming more involved? We’re having a planning meeting this month to come up with some tangible measurements for our ministry and to decide how we can better align with our church’s vision.

Can You Help Me?

Do you have some suggestions or advice on how to make these resolutions a reality?  Leave me a comment and fill me in!

DIY Tie Dye Sheets {Toddler Christmas Gift}

Our Christmas shopping is almost {almost!} completed and I wanted to add something homemade to the kids’ gifts.  For my three year old daughter, I decided to jazz up her bed sheets with some purple tie dye.  Want to follow along?

New-To-You Bed Sheets!

Abigail is almost three and she is starting to develop “favorites” only she doesn’t call them that.  She always refers to them as “her best”.  For example, she’ll say “Purple is my best color” when she really means that purple is her favorite.  Recently, she’s been quite obsessed with purple, and I wanted to get her some purple sheets.  The only trouble is we have WAY too many toddler bed sheets already, so decided to upcycle a few she already had!

Now, I should confess from the beginning: I have no idea what I’m doing.  I looked at a few tie dye posts I found via Pinterest and even watched a video on Youtube where some guy kept talking about owl spit and the importance of heat.  I also read the directions on the RIT dye, but they all seemed to advocate for different methods, so I just kind of guessed.  Sounds like a recipe for disaster, huh?  Well, stick around and see!

To begin, I laid the sheets out flat (well, as flat as a fitted sheet can lay) on a too-small counter and put a wooden spoon in the middle.  I spun the spoon in order to twirl the sheet up into a hurricane design.

After the sheet was all twirled up, I placed rubber bands around it to hold it in place.

I found an old bucket left over from summer fun at the beach and dumped the packets of RIT dye powder in it.  I added some salt because one of the sources said to do that.  Can’t hurt, right?  Right?  Did I mention I have no idea what I’m doing?

I placed the wrapped sheets (I also did a pillowcase) one at a time into the bucket.  Leaving it in the dye for about 10 minutes on each side.  Well, that was the plan, but I did leave one sheet in for a significantly longer time while I left to go deliver dinner to one of our church families.  Focus is not my strong suit.

After being in the dye, I placed each sheet inside a plastic bag.  Now, none of the sources said to do this, but we did do this when we tie dyed at our VBS this year, so I thought it would be a good idea.  You’re supposed to leave the material in the bag for 24 hours, but……….

I got anxious to see how they turned out, so I opened up the bags after about 5 hours.  That’s a pretty long time if you ask me.  Now, I wish I would have taken pictures at this point because the sheets were still white, but the hurricane design was very purple.  I was kind of hoping for more purple, but I liked the design.  Anyway, the camera was ALL THE WAY upstairs, so you’ll just have to imagine this step.

Next, I washed the sheets twice without any soap.  So, I guess I just rinsed them.  But I used a washing machine, so it seemed like I was washing them.  After they were done being rinsed, all of the sheet was purple and the hurricane design was dark purple, so that was perfect for me!  Just what I was hoping for!

To the dryer next and then finally onto the bed to see how they looked.  Pretty cute, huh?
