Port Farms: Great Place for Erie Family Fun!

Port Farms

Last weekend, we headed out to a new family favorite location — Port Farms!  Located in Waterford, it’s about a 40 minute drive from our Erie, PA home.  As our kids get older, the place just gets better and better.  They’ve got a giant “corn box”, monster high slides, goats, tractor ride, Bunnyville, and lots more fun!  If you’re anywhere near the Erie area, you should certainly take a trip!  Check out the pictures from our fun!

Corn Box (Always the First Stop!)

Goats!

(For only 25 cents, you can have the privilege of feeding the goats!)

Check out these crazy chicken costumes we saw on the way to the goats!

I need to get one of these for our Children’s Ministry!!

Bunnyville

We just got rid of all our pets, but this place really made me want a bunny.  Maybe for Easter?

Ride Them Horses!

I love how there are so many different “stations” where the kids can engage in pretend play!

Picking Out a Pumpkin

Before we left, we grabbed a few pumpkins (only 35 cents a pound!)  Now they are proudly sitting on our porch.   We’ve been reading  The Pumpkin Patch Parable with the kids and will carve up a few smiley faces soon!

This is only a small taste of all the stuff there is to do at Port Farms.  Cost is $8 per adult (I’m not sure about kids, since ours are still free (2 and under).  Check out their website here!

Oh yeah, in case you’re wondering — this isn’t some kind of sponsored post.  We just had a great time and we want other families to know about it too!

Got a great Fall Activity in our town?  Leave me a comment and tell me all about it!

Have a great Fall Season!

That Goose Just Bit Me!

Today, I’m guest posting over at Crafty Mom 101 as part of Guest Post Month!

Here’s a little peek at my post to get you started:

At the beginning of Summer, I thought about making a Bucket List.  My kids are now old enough to enjoy many of our local attractions so I wanted to make the most of this season.  Of course, I never actually got around to writing the bucket list, but I did have a lot of ideas floating around my head.  Walk to a nearby Dairy Queen to get ice cream?  Check!  Visit my sister and swim in her pool? Done!  Visit a local “walk-through zoo”?  Here we come!

I had seen billboards for Pymatuning Deer Park several times and every time I saw an ad, I thought “We should go there!”  But alas, summer was slipping away and the day trip wasn’t on the calendar!  I had heard many a friend talk about how fun it was and how much the kids enjoy it, so I finally buckled down, took a good hard look at my calendar and blocked out a day to go.  My friend Nicole and her kids signed up for the fun too.

Head on over to Crafty Mom 101 to read the rest of the post and let me now what you’re hoping to squeeze in before the weather turns too cold!

Story time in the Park: Sheep

IMG_6134

We’ve been doing Story Time at Whitford Park in Erie all summer and man, do I love it!  It’s one of my favorite things in the ministry.  Recently, we had a sheep theme day.  Here’s the details on books and crafts.

Miss Jen Reading Stories

This week, Miss Jen joined us as the story reader. She’s an elementary teacher at a local school, so she already knew a few faces.  I love when we can make those kind of connections.   It shows that the people who attend our church are just regular people.   She did a great job reading.

Craft Time!

For our craft, we did the classic “cotton ball sheep”.  Miss Anne made white circles and little black legs as well as a little head for the sheep.  We have eyeball stickers for the kids to use on the face, but as you’ll see below — some kids decided to go a little crazy with the eyes!

That’s a busy craft table!

Miss Anne’s girls brought some of their stuffed sheep dolls from home and that really livened the table up. Great idea to remember!

Here’s my daughter’s sheep!  As you can see, she went a little nutty with the eyeballs.

I guess she created some type of spider-sheep.  Oh well!

You can find the directions for the sheep craft at Favorite Easter Crafts or check out my Pinterest Board for more Story Time ideas!

There’s Something Wrong Here.

Cow Day at Erie Chick Fil A

The kids ran happily between our table and a nearby window, laughing and tossing their balloons in the air.  Chick-fil-A had placed a little plush cow on every table in the restaurant and attached a balloon, some white, some black, and some speckled.  Our kids had been given these little toys on a previous visit, so we assumed they were okay to take and play with.  Uncle Eric didn’t agree.  He said he had heard a Chick-fil-A lady say, “Those are decorations.  You can’t have them”.

I scoffed.  ”No, that couldn’t be.  That would be completely un-Chick-fil-A!”

Not one minute later, I heard the lady telling the kids to put the balloons back –they weren’t for kids to play with.  She promised she would bring some balloons that weren’t tied to little cows.   We never did see those balloons.

As we sat and remarked about the ridiculousness of hosting a “Dress Like a Cow” party and then telling kids they couldn’t touch the decorations.  Who did they think would be coming to this thing?  The Bounce House outside clearly indicated they were anticipating children, so it follows that any cute cuddly thing left on EVERY table would be seen as a party favor.

Apparently not.

“They didn’t say, ‘It is my pleasure’ at the register either”, Uncle Eric said.

What is happening to this place?   “It is my pleasure” is like a trademark of Chick-fil-A.  Sometimes I go through the drive-thru just to hear the kid say it (and to get some slamming good lemonade).

We speculated on these little things.  Sure, it wasn’t much.  A silly rule here.  A little drop in friendliness there.  But as I mentioned in this post, “It’s the little things that really make Chick-Fil-A stand out.”   Was it just a crazy day? Was it a change in ownership?

Of course, Erie Chick-fil-A is till leaps and bounds ahead of other fast-food restaurants, but that’s not really the point.

The point is, Chick-fil-A has set a standard.  They are ultra-nice, super helpful, and always glad to see you.  It is their pleasure to serve you.  They make you feel welcome and the bathrooms are always spotless.  Because of these things, I usually can’t say enough nice things about Chick-fil-A.  It’s why I spent an entire afternoon making cow shirts for our family.  Sure, I got some free food — but I really did it because I have an fierce loyalty to Chick-fil-A.    But if they are not going to hold to their own standard, I might switch my eating-out loyalty to Coffee Culture (after all, they do have Fair Trade!).

All this to say, little things DO make a BIG difference, in business and in church.   And, if you start something, stick with it.  Don’t work for a super high standard if you’re not going to be able to maintain it.  People will notice.  Strive for excellence and be consistent.  Oh yeah, and keep the bathrooms clean.

Six Days till Cow Appreciation!

Cow Appreciation Day

I am a serious fan of Chick-Fil-A.  Not only do they have over-the-top customer service, but the food is good.  Really good.   And you know what?  It’s even BETTER when it’s free.  That’s why “Cow Appreciation Day” is marked on my calender every year along with birthdays and anniversaries.  It’s a big deal.

And this year (as if the event wasn’t cool enough already), Erie Chick-Fil-A is really kicking it up a notch with special events all week including a “make a costume” day and Cow-themed story time on Wednesday.   I can’t remember all the details but you could get more information if you call the store.  I’m sure they would be happy to help.  They always are!  As for me, I’ll be making a cow costume for the baby this week! Maybe I’ll see you Friday at Chick-Fil-A!
