Summer time isn’t complete without a camp out, even if it is just in the living room. For this story time, we’re focusing on camping.
The books we originally were hoping to get weren’t available at the library when we needed them, so we did a little improvising!
- Camping Day
- Ladybug Girl and Bingo
- Just a Little Too Young
- Just a Day at the Lake
We were thinking about using (but couldn’t get):
- PigPig goes to Camp
- Fred and Ted go Camping
Songs and Fingerplays
- S’more Song from Bob & Larry’s Campfire Songs CD
- Twinkle Twinkle
- Wave Hello
- Going on a Bear Hunt
- Did you ever go a-camping?
For the craft, we were hoping to do a campfire CD inspired by Spoonful, but the test craft turned out a bit disastrous. Turns out, you really need hot glue to get those rocks to stay and we certainly wouldn’t be pulling out the glue guns at story time!
Instead, we went with the tissue paper fire on construction paper, inspired by this picture on Pinterest. Here’s the run-down.
What You Need:
- Popsicle Craft sticks (mini ones if possible)
- Tissue Paper (red, yellow, orange), cut into small squares
- Construction Paper (preferably black)
What You Do:
Have kids glue their Popsicle sticks (fire wood) into place on their construction paper.
Have them take the squares of tissue paper, squish them up, and then place them on the “fire wood” to create a camp fire.
When the fire was complete, we had kids put a rock on their picture to let it dry while they played on the nearby playground.
