What’s in the Bible: Volume 10

Once again, I am astonished by the amount of information Phil Vischer and the crew have packed into this volume of “What’s in the Bible”.   The usual cast of Buck Denver, Sunday School lady, the Pirate, and the rest of the gang do a great job of uncovering all kinds of questions and answers about what was going on between the Old Testament and New Testament.   Historical background, cultural details, and all kinds of great information is laid out in order to give the viewer a much full picture of the New Testament and Scripture in general.  Check out the trailer:

The level of information is pretty intense and in-depth.  There was stuff I didn’t even know and I’m a Bible major!  The ideal age group for this would probably be age 8 and up, but the younger crew might like some parts of it.  Phil and the gang do a great job explaining the information in a way that’s easy to pick up and easy to remember.  For example, check out this video snippet about the Four Jewish Groups of Jesus’ day on this page.  You can check out a bunch of other video clips too and read the transcript if you want!

Coloring Pages

There are also a TON of coloring pages that accompany this volume. The coloring pages are high quality and are perfect for the Easter season coming up!  There are a few specific Easter-themed like crosses, the empty tomb, and Jesus praying in the garden — so check them out!

In conclusion, I’m always impressed with the videos in the series, but this one really took it over the top.  It is such a great resource for Sunday School teachers, parents, and Children’s Ministry people everywhere!  If you haven’t picked up your series yet, please use the code below and do so today!

Mommy Bear Media {Review}

I hate going into video rental stores.  When you go to a rental store, you’ve got two options:

  1. Browse in the hopelessly outdated Family Friendly Section
  2. Browse in the new releases and constantly be assaulted by offensive, scary, or otherwise unwholesome movie covers

Redbox is a little better, but still not always “family friendly”.   That’s why I was thrilled to hear about Mommy Bear Media.   Though it’s not a rental site, every movie on the site is PG-13 or below.   Here’s what the “About Us” page says:

Welcome to Mommy Bear Media! We are so glad you found us. We are a small family company dedicated to make shopping for your next favorite movie a good experience.

What makes our website different than any other website is that we only carry the “good stuff.” What we mean by that is that we only have movies that are:

Clean

  • No R, NC-17, TV-MA ratings
  • Selective PG-13 and TV-14 ratings
  • Not too much sex, violence, etc.
  • If the movie or tv show is on www.commonsensemedia.org, we only include it if it’s green age 14 or lower (that means movies they say are “on” for ages 14 and under)

Good

  • High quality
  • Top-rated
  • Are worth watching
  • Have a good message
There is a huge selection to choose from including new releases like The Hunger Games ($21) and We Bought a Zoo ($17) to classics like My Fair Lady ($11) and The Lion King ($19).   Though all the movies have a rating of PG-13 and under, I wouldn’t classify all as “Family Friendly”.  For example, I don’t really think the Twilight Series is appropriate for kids, not matter what the rating.  On the whole though, there were MANY MANY more good movies than bad, making Mommy Bear Media a great place to browse!

Taking A Look

As an affiliate, I was able to select a movie to check out.  I was torn between a video for my kids and a video for the “grown ups”.  When I spied the Boy Meets World Series, one my favorite shows growing up, I knew I had to grab it!
Boy Meets World: The Complete Second Season | BUY Boy Meets World: Complete Season 2 with free shipping. Shop for good clean movies, family-friendly movies, and the best new movies on DVD and Blu-ray.

As I watched the series, I remembered why I loved it so much.  This show does a great job blending kid-like antics with real-life troubles.  Within the first three shows, topics such as death of an acquaintance, class differences, job loss and job fulfilment are all covered.   The producers make the problem real enough to drive home a point, but not overwhelmingly so.  It would be a great show for preteens to watch with their parents or older kids to watch on their own.

Thinking about getting a movie for an upcoming Family Night?  Head to Mommy Bear Media!  With fast, free shipping — you’ve got nothing to lose (except the nightmares from looking at all those movie covers!).

What’s in the Bible: Wanderin’ in the Desert

What's in the Bible Curriculum Logo

Oh Veggie Tales.  Nothing could warm the hearts of children and adults like a tiny asparagus playing the role of David the shepherd or a giant cucumber starring as King Nebuchadnezzar.   Nothing could fill a half hour better than a row of singing peas. Though not entirely accurate, this series was absurdly funny, and let’s face it, Phil Vischer is a genius with his writing.

When I heard that Phil Vischer had embarked an another grand project called “What in the Bible?”, I knew it had to be something good.  So, of course, I’m thrilled to be part of the Race to the Finish blog tour.  This tour covers every book of the Old Testament from Genesis to Malachi.  I had the privilege of taking a look at Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.    Before I get into the details of “Wanderin’ in the Desert” (Volume 3), take a look at this fun promo video:

If you’ve ever read through the books of Leviticus and Numbers, you know they can be… a little dry.   There’s not much you can do to spice up an entire book of rules, but Vischer did a great job keeping the audience engaged with the help of some really fun characters like Buck Denver, Sunday School Lady and Preacher Man.  They took on the tough task of explaining the difference between ritual rules and ethical rules, mapping out the meaning of holiness, and showing how these books fit into the big picture of the Bible.  The songs were lively and fun (I especially loved the Pentateuch one on the boat — you can see it on the promo video) The information in these videos seems easy enough for kids to understand, but also informative for parents as well.  For example, I love the parallel of the Israelites wandering in the desert to a really LONG time-out!   The Bentley Brothers were fabulous, performing creative and fun songs to coordinate with each weeks lesson.  I can see kids really liking these guys!

In the church edition DVD pack, you get the DVD to watch as a group (with 4 weeks worth of sessions),  a DVD-ROM with audio and video files (including bonus out-takes), as well as Print Materials for each week.   Some of the print materials include worksheets or templates for small group activities, prop lists, and take home papers. You could easily use the DVD without the print material, but it’s nice to have if you want to add a few extras each week.

Overall, I’m impressed with the content and Phil’s courage to take on the tough issues in the Bible.  I’ve heard a lot of good about this DVD series, and I’m in complete agreement.  Be sure to check out the others stops along this blog tour and enter the grand prize giveaway (a complete set of the Old Testament curriculum!!), click on over to the What’s in the Bible page here!  Want to pick up your own copy, click here to head to the “What’s in the Bible” store (don’t forget to use the coupon in the post sidebar).
