For our second story time of the summer, we focused on frogs. It was an appropriate theme for the rainy day. I’m sure the frogs were loving the weather. Kids and their parents however… maybe not so much. Even still, we got a small gathering at Whitford Park, so we’re glad about that!
This year, I picked up a little Folkmanis Red Squirrel Finger Puppet from Amazon to use as our “Story Time Mascot”. The kids really seem to enjoy “Whitty” and we spend the first few minutes with kids petting the squirrel and sharing their names.
After opening greetings, we sang a few songs including:
If You’re Happy and You Know It (Clap Your Hands)
Rain, Rain, Go Away
5 Green and Speckled Frogs
The kids loved the froggy song even though they didn’t pick up on the words right away. They loved doing the motions along with me. Check out the video below for instructions.
Also, be sure to grab your own frog stick puppets over at Pickled Bums.
The books we read were:
Froggy Builds a Tree House
The Big Wide-Mouthed Frog
Froggy Builds a Tree House was a cute story but a little lengthy for anyone under the age of 3. The older kids loved the book, but the younger kids got pretty wiggly by the end.
The Big Wide-Mouthed Frog was fun for the kids. They loved shouting out the different animals they saw.
Normally, we do our books first and then our craft, but this week we started the craft, took a break to let the paint dry, read books, and then headed back to the craft tables to finish up.
To begin, kids painted a paper plate green.
After the plate was dry (and the books were read), the kids glued on pre-cut feet and a pre-cut tongue. We also had sticky eyes and googly eyes for the kids to use.
A work of perfection!
Wow, that’s a long tongue!
That’s it for this week! Next week is Ocean Theme!
