Story Time in the Park: Ocean

Story Time in the Park: Ocean

Deep in the Deep Blue Sea!

It’s our third week for Story Time in the Park this summer and we were happy to see the Early Connection bus roll up to join the activities at Whitford Park!  We met a few new families at Shade’s Beach as well during the evening session. Always exciting!  Here’s the recap!

Songs and Finger Plays

For the ocean theme, we did mostly fishy songs, but also through in one classic (Open Close Them) because we were reading a book about opposites.  Here’s the songs we did.

5 Little Fishes

Ocean Story Time

You probably already know this classic fish song featuring a chomping shark, but if you need a refresher, check out the youtube video below.

Shark in the Sea

(Tune of Wheels on the Bus)

Based on the video below, we changed the ending words to “Deep in the Deep blue sea” and it seemed to flow better!

Caught a Fish

1,2,3,4,5 Once I caught a fish alive

6,7,8,9,10 Then I let him go again

Why did I let him go?

Because he bit my finger so!

Which finger did he bite?

This little finger on the right!

Open ShutThem

This is a song we do quite a bit because it’s easy for even pre-talkers to pick up on the motions.  Kids of all ages seem to like it!

Ocean Story Time

These are books we did for Ocean Story Time.  I read Octopus Opposites to begin, which the kids loved.  I let them guess (or read) the opposite on each page and that really got them engaged!

Next we did To the Beach, which was a little longer than our normal fare, but the kids really liked the pictures and found it funny that the family had to keep turning back.

To close out the reading time, we read The Biggest Thing in the Ocean.  The younger crowd (age 3 and under) really enjoyed this one, but the older kids found it a little dull.  They all laughed at the end though when the whale at the squid!

Craft Time!

We actually did two different crafts this week because the Octopus/Squid project was a little too elaborate for toddlers.

The older kids made an octopus (or squid) and the younger kids used foamy fish stickers to make a paper plate fish tank.
