Five ways Children’s Ministry is like the documentary “Oceans”

Trailer

1. Everyone Needs A Friend

Time and time again, big fish in this enchanting Disney documentary were in the company of smaller fish sidekicks.  Sometimes the little fish had peculiar jobs like cleaning teeth.  Others just seemed to be along for the ride.  I even saw one fish swim into the gills of a shark (now that’s a friend who sticks closer than a brother – yikes!).  Regardless, the big fish didn’t swim alone.  The same is true in ministry.  You may be the big fish, the person in charge, the decision maker.   Don’t swim alone.  Have a sidekick friend that will help you with those dirty jobs.  Someone who will be there for you when you need to swim in silence for a bit.  It’s a big ocean.  You don’t want to get lost out there all by yourself.

2. Who Knew Birds Could Do that?

Flickr photo by christopher.woo

I knew birds dive underwater to get food (although, based on the youtube videos I just browsed, not many other people are aware of this fact. Case in point: “Suicidal Ducks” video), but the birds in this stunning scene were swimming just as well as the fish. Check out the trailer and see. They transition straight from the sky to the sea with no problems at all. I had no idea they could do that!

As Children’s Ministry workers, we often underestimate the abilities of our volunteer team as well. We think we “have to do it all” in order to get it done right. We have our volunteers pigeon-holed (a little bird humor for you) and don’t think about what amazing abilities might be just below the surface. Let’s allow them to stretch their wings a little, above the water or below.  Ask them to do something completely out of their “normal” duties or open up a night for suggestions (and actually listen!). You may be quite surprised at the diversity in your own nest

3. Stay Out of the Danger Zone

In one scene, a whole swarm of little fish were swimming in the wake of a shark.  The narrator explains that sticking so close makes their swimming easier, even though the shark could turn and eat them at any moment (just doesn’t seem worth it to me).  How many times have we put the life of our kid’s program on the line for the sake of making the job a little easier?   Do we flirt with danger by becoming prideful, lazy, or mediocre because it’s easier to “keep swimming” than to fight against the current of sin?

4. Only 1 in 1,000

Did you know that only 1 in 1,000 sea turtles make it to the ocean unscathed?  And yet, that is enough to repopulate the species.  Amazing.   In the same way, not every one of our ministry ideas has to be the next “Big Idea”. Perhaps if only 1 in 1,000 made it to the sea of fruition, it would still be enough to propel the ministry forward.  Stop putting so much pressure on yourself!  It’s okay to get a few ideas picked off by seagulls (naysayers) and a few eaten alive by giant fish (the ones that have lived in the ocean forever).  It only takes one great idea to transform a ministry.  One in a thousand perhaps.  Keep moving ahead.  The right idea will make it through.

5. Don’t be Like the Seahorse

There is a sea horse that will never move out of 10 foot radius.  Its entire life.  It is born in a garden of sea weed and it will die in that same cluster of plants.  Why?  Apparently its frail little body can’t handle the change.  If he were to drift 11 feet from his home base, he’d be sleeping with the fishes (if you know what I’m saying).  Don’t be like the sea horse.  Don’t get stuck in the way things have always been.  Don’t be afraid to venture out a bit into the big blue.  You can always come back and regroup.  Take a few chances.  You might be surprised at what there is to discover.

Animoto: Great Picture Slideshow Tool

Have you heard about Animoto?  A friend recently told me all about it and I have to say, I’m impressed.  This service helps you make picture slideshows — QUICK!

Check out a recent video we made:

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

You can either pay per video ($3) or sign up for a subscription (either $5/month or $30/year) for unlimited videos. You can even make a free 30 second video to get a feel for the program. If you’ve ever put together a slideshow, you know how tedious it can be to get all the little transitions in, etc. Animoto does all that for you, and in about 10 minutes! You just upload your pictures (that takes the longest), pick your music, and then they finalize the video. If it’s not just what you want, you can go back and re-arrange pictures, add some, take some out, or “remix” the video, all for no additional cost.

Great service — A huge help to Children’s Ministry workers everywhere! I love it!

Spy Guy (Part Three)

This the last installment of our three part series. Be sure to check out the bloopers at the end. Joe (Spy Guy) had a blast coming up with all of those!

Another Great Bible Study Tool (for kids!)

Phil Vischer has done it again. The creator of Veggie Tales and Jelly Telly has developed another very exciting project. A video series which helps fill in the gaps between the classic stories of the Bible and helps show the “Big Picture” of Creation, Fall, and Redemption. The series is called What’s in the Bible and it looks very promising.

Check out the first five minutes of DVD 1:

The price is great: 12.99 per DVD or you can win a signed copy (contest ends May 6) at Ryan’s Blog

Seems like it would be great for all ages, but kids ages 6-10 would especially benefit. I hope to get my hands on a copy (budget funds pending) and check it out as well. If anyone else has it, let me know what you think!!

TV Turn Off Week: Our Progress Report

The Whitney house has been celebrating, and I was surprised at how hard to was this year! Maybe it was because the baby brings new responsibilities and at the end of the day we just want to crash in front of the TV. However, we resisted! Instead, we went for walks after dinner (it’s nice that the sun is still out), read books, and even painted our bedroom! It seems like it’s been a slower paced week, even though it’s no different than any other week. Sometimes we just sat on the couch and talked, giving us a chance to reconnect. And of course, we spent lots of time playing with the baby! I’m glad we stuck with the commitment, even though it was hard.
What about your family? Did you celebrate? What did you fill your newly acquired free time with?

TV Turn Off Week

It’s here again! That wonderful time of year that we turn off our sets for a week and concentrate on some quality family time! I can’t believe it snuck up on me like this (it actually started April 19th!). In order to fully celebrate, I would encourage you to pick out a week and abstain from all “moving media” (that means hulu and youtube along with regular TV). Now what to do instead? With Earth day just behind us, it’s a great idea to head outside and enjoy God’s creation! Here’s some ideas for young and old alike:

  • Jump! Whether you call it skipping rope or jump roping, it’s a great activity to improve strength and fitness and can be performed on grass or pavement.
  • Retreat to the Beach. Or, instead of driving to the beach, recreate a piece of the coast’s serene atmosphere with a sandbox in the yard.
  • Be Farm and Garden Fresh. Get to know your local farmer and enlist the kids to join you at the local farmers’ markets. Better yet, plant your own garden that everyone can care for and enjoy all season long.
  • Let’s Go Fly a Kite! Show the kids how to soar into a colorful sky with only the force of nature to power your kite. A centuries-old activity, kite flying can be enjoyed at any age—with a little wind, of course!
  • Give Back. Gather the family for a volunteer day dedicated to beautifying the earth. Many communities have organizations that champion environmental protection and regularly organize events like stream and trail clean-ups.
  • Be Bubbly! Invite the neighbors to create bubble wands out of objects found around the house like straws, pipe cleaners, strawberry baskets and coat hangers. Take the kids outside and have your own bubble party!
  • Take a Hike. Locate a nature trail near you and take the kids on a woodsy adventure. Hiking is a group activity that provides great exercise and hands-on experiences with the natural world.
  • Start a Kickball Game. All it takes is a rubber playground ball, make-shift bases and some friends to start a kickball game. Create a neighborhood tournament and coach the kids though innings of bouncing fun.
  • Catch and Release. Butterflies are some of nature’s most beautiful creatures, although they aren’t easy to observe when they flutter in the sky. Using an insect or butterfly net, capture them and show the kids how to appreciate their beauty up close. Then let them loose.

What’s So Great about Turnoff Week?

Turning off the screen gives us time to think, read, create, and do the things we never have time for. This allows us to connect with our families and engage in our communities. We feel good about ourselves as we grow more physically and mentally active.
