Valentine’s Day Projects for Kids

Valentine’s Day Projects for Kids

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to start decorate the halls of your home, school, or church in the vibrant colors of red and pink!  Here’s a great project for the preschoolers in your life and an adaptation for those older kids that may want to celebrate the day as well!

Valentine's Day Heart Collage Placemat (6)

What You Need:

What You Do:

Depending on the age of your children, you may want to pre-punch hearts for them to use.  If you have kindergarten kids (and a small group at that), you may want them to have a turn with the hole puncher to build up some hand strength.   Each child will need about 20 hearts.

After the hearts are punched and distributed, allow children to place them on a large piece of construction paper.   Tell the children that these will be placemats once they are completed.  We had some fun glitter glue sticks to use, but any glue will do.

Some children may even want to dab glue onto their place mat paper with a paint brush.

Once all the hearts are secured and the glue is dried, you may want to run the place mat through a laminator.  I love to laminate things. On the big day, serve pink pancakes on the lovely Valentine’s Day place mat!

For Older Kids

Do you like the concept, but are looking for something a little more challenging for older kids?  Why not have them make a paper heart canvas collage?

What You Need:

  • Canvas (Michael’s Craft Store)
  • Paper Hearts cut from newspaper or construction paper
  • Water color paints
  • Glue, watered down
  • Paint brushes

What You Do:

Encourage kids to paint their canvas with watercolors however they would like.

Once the paint is dry, use the glue mixture (half water and half glue) to spread a layer of stickiness on the canvas.  Place paper hearts on the canvas.  If the hearts don’t seem to be sticking well, you can add another layer of the glue mixture on top.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
