Have you ever thought about starting a blog?

It wasn’t very long ago that I was at home with my first born daughter.  At three months old, she wasn’t completely time-consuming anymore and I was looking for a little extra stimulation and conversation.

I had kept my job as a Children’s Ministry director at my church, but I did most of my working from home.  I soon discovered the world of kidmin blogs, and new mom blogs, and art blogs, and a million other types of blogs online!  I quickly got swept away in all the amazing information and knew I had found a great creative outlet as well as a way to help other Children’s Ministry people like myself.

Maybe You’re in the Same Boat?

Maybe you’re looking to get your feet wet in the blogging world (after all, you’ve got some valuable stuff to share too!), but you’re not quite sure where to start.  Don’t fear — it’s not as tough as you might think!

Starting a Blog is not as difficult as you think!

Ready, Set, Go!

You can have a blog up and running in less time than it takes to watch an episode of Paw Patrol and all it takes is four easy steps.

Step #1: Name your Place

It’s time to buy a domain! Is there a name that has been jumping around in your head?  Something that is easy to spell, easy to remember, and easy to understand?

Spend a little time thinking of a great URL and ask a few friends and family members for feedback.   I chose Growing Kids Ministry because because I wanted to capitalize on the concept of growing — not only in numbers (bring those friends, kids!), but also growing as leaders and helping those in my circle of influence grow spiritually.

Is there something you’re particularly passionate about? Can you use it in a name?  Maybe you’re all over the map and would rather just use your own name or a pen name — that’s a great idea too!

Okay…

Go to bluehost and click the green get started now button.

2. Enter a domain name in the left box under “new domain”. Make sure “.com” is selected from the drop down menu beside it. Click the “Next” button.

3. Enter your account information. Make sure that you have a valid email address because this is where they will send your log in info.

Step #2: Get Some Hosting

Now, don’t get all nervous — hosting may sound expensive, but is only $3.95 a month!

Under the Package Information tab you will need to choose your “Account Plan”. Click on the drop down menu and choose the plan that you want. I like to make sure that no other boxes are checked except the “Domain Whois Privacy” box which will keep your personal information private {I recommend that}. *Note: If you are registering a new domain this option is available, but if you have an existing domain it won’t show up.

5. Fill in the billing information and click “next”.

On the next page you will be asked if you want to add on any upgrades.  I don’t use any of these personally, but you might find something that strikes your fancy.  After taking a look, you can continue on to complete your purchase.

After completing the purchase, you will receive a confirmation email from BLUEHOST that will contain your login information.

Step #3: Let’s Get Fancy

Now it’s time to upload WordPress to the Server {Bluehost}. This sounds more confusing than it is…but I promise you can do it!

6. Log in to your Bluehost account {you should have received an email with your user id/password information after purchasing your hosting package}. Click “Control Panel Login” and enter your user id and password.

7. Once logged in…click the Install WordPress icon under “website builders”.

There you have it… You are done with the hard part!

Make sure you remember the information you created to access your site. Your site will look VERY basic right now. You created the site, but you do not have a design yet. Follow below for my favorite WordPress themes.

Step #4: Choose your Style

Some people are traditional, some rustic chic, others contemporary. Just like personal style, blogs need personality too. This is where you will pick a theme.

There are tons of different “free” themes that you can choose from. If you are trying to save money (or just getting started) then I suggest just choosing a free theme. I use a premium {meaning that it’s paid for} theme.

If you go with a premium theme, Genesis and Thesis are both very popular.

That’s it!

To log in to your new site go to:
